Peri-oral dermatitis is a common skin condition that often appears as a red, bumpy rash around the mouth, nose, and sometimes even the eyes. It can be frustrating and uncomfortable, especially because it may resemble acne or irritation, but it requires very specific care to manage properly.

What Causes It?
While the exact cause isn’t always clear, several factors are known to trigger or worsen peri-oral dermatitis:
Overuse of topical steroids (including over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams)
Heavy or occlusive skincare products
Toothpaste containing fluoride or harsh ingredients
Hormonal changes
Stress or immune changes
Common Symptoms:
Redness and inflamed skin around the mouth and chin
Small, pimple-like bumps (papules or pustules)
Dry, flaky, or irritated skin
A burning or tight sensation
How to Help Calm It Down
Here are a few general suggestions that may help reduce symptoms:
Stop using steroid creams (unless prescribed otherwise)
Simplify your skincare, avoid heavy oils, thick moisturisers, or actives like retinoids and AHAs during a flare
Use a gentle cleanser and barrier-repairing moisturiser.
Avoid fluoride toothpaste, or try switching brands temporarily.
Seek professional help from a dermatologist for long-term relief and to rule out other causes.
Jessicat would also recommend trying with BLUE and Yellow LED light therapy for 20 minutes.

A Note About Treatment
It’s important to treat peri-oral dermatitis with care and not self-diagnose. What works for one person may not work for another, and in many cases, a medical approach is needed, especially when prescription creams or antibiotics are required.
