Lipedema & Lymphedema: What’s the Difference?
Many people confuse lipedema and lymphedema, and it's easy to see why. Both conditions involve swelling, affect the limbs, and can cause pain and discomfort.
But despite some similarities, these are two very different medical issues with different causes, symptoms, and treatments.
What Is Lipedema?
Lipedema is a chronic fat disorder that mainly affects women and is often misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphedema. It causes an abnormal buildup of fat, usually in the legs, hips, buttocks, and sometimes the arms.
What’s unique is that this fat doesn’t respond to diet or exercise the same way normal fat does.
Suffering from Lipedema can also take an emotional toll, including making a person very self-conscious, limiting their wardrobe choices and making them not want to take part in activities like swimming where the lower body is exposed.
This condition is very different from Lymphedema, and symptoms are not reduced with treatments like Lymphatic Drainage Massage, as they may be reduced if he were suffering from Lymphedema.

Common signs of Lipedema:
-
A disproportionate lower body, with fat accumulating from the hips to the ankles
-
Tenderness, pain, or easy bruising in the affected areas
-
Feet are not swollen (which helps differentiate it from lymphedema)
-
A clear "cuff" or step-off at the ankles or wrists
-
Often worsens after hormonal changes, like puberty, pregnancy, or menopause
-
Family history is common
What Is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a progressive lymphatic disorder in which lymph fluid accumulates in the body’s tissues due to a damaged or blocked lymphatic system.
It may be inherited (primary lymphedema) or acquired (secondary lymphedema) through factors such as surgery, cancer treatment, infection, or injury.
Often underdiagnosed due to limited clinical familiarity, lymphedema can lead to serious complications if left untreated, including infections like cellulitis, chronic swelling, loss of mobility, and psychological impacts related to body image and self-esteem.
Common signs of lymphedema:
-
Swelling in one or both arms or legs, including the feet or hands
-
Heaviness or tightness in the limb
-
Thickened or hardened skin (called fibrosis)
-
Risk of infections like cellulitis
-
Can develop gradually or suddenly
Misdiagnosing lipedema as lymphedema (or vice versa) can lead to frustrating and ineffective treatments. For example, if you have lipedema, typical lymphedema treatments like compression or manual lymph drainage may only offer limited relief.
If you're experiencing persistent swelling or discomfort in your legs or arms, especially if it’s not improving with lifestyle changes, it’s important to see a specialist, ideally someone familiar with both conditions.
Lipedema and lymphedema are very different conditions that require different approaches to treatment. Getting the right diagnosis is the first step toward managing symptoms and improving your quality of life.

To achieve these results, Jessicat uses HIFU fat reduction therapy in conjunction with Venus Freeze RF and Exilis Ultra 360 RF/Ultrasound fat reduction and skin tightening therapies throughout several treatment packages.

Due to being a loyal client who regularly received facial treatments with us, Jessicat provided her with low-cost treatments so she could have as many as she needed.
We will continue to work with her to build on her results and, as cost-effectively as possible, to keep the symptoms of Lipedema at bay.
We did not know if these treatments would work as there is no real precedent for the treatment protocol we have worked through together. We worked as a team, and our BeautyCat worked hard to maintain a solid diet and exercise regime throughout her treatment packages.
Jess did her best to reward her for her efforts by providing a lot of extra time, complimentary to try and push her treatment results further and see if we could actually treat her Lipedema effectively and help her avoid surgery.
We layered HyperVibe antigravity and full-body Red and Infared LED Light therapies into her treatment sessions to push her results further. We also set her up at home with a full-body LED Light blanket and high-strength vibration plate to use in between her weekly in-clinic treatments.
The surgical results we have seen have not been overly impressive, and Jessicat insanely proud of what her client and she have achieved together so far.
How Vibration Plates, Infrared Sauna, Red LED Light & Dry Brushing Can Support Lipedema Care
Living with lipedema can feel like a daily challenge; the heaviness, tenderness, and swelling in the legs and arms often make movement and circulation more difficult. But gentle, consistent support for your lymphatic system and connective tissue can make a world of difference.
At our clinic, we combine science-backed tools like vibration therapy, red LED light, dry brushing, and infrared sauna within our 3-Stage Body Program to help improve circulation, release tight fascia, and encourage lymphatic flow.
What Is a Vibration Plate?
A vibration plate, like the Hypervibe, uses gentle oscillating vibrations to stimulate your muscles and lymphatic system. When you stand or move on it, your body naturally engages in thousands of micro muscle contractions per minute; helping boost blood flow, lymph drainage, and tissue oxygenation.
For someone with lipedema, this can:
- Encourage lymphatic movement to reduce heaviness and swelling
- Improve circulation to support oxygen and nutrient delivery
- Help loosen tight, fibrotic tissue (myofascial release)
- Gently strengthen muscles without overloading the joints.
Choosing the Right Vibration Plate for Lipedema
Not all vibration plates are created equal, and for lipedema, the type of movement makes a big difference.
- Vertical vibration plates move straight up and down, creating strong, jarring vibrations that can be too harsh on sensitive tissues and joints. While they’re great for fitness and muscle training, they can sometimes cause discomfort or even worsen fluid buildup in lipedema-prone areas.
- Oscillating (or pivotal) vibration plates, like the Hypervibe, move in a gentle side-to-side motion that mimics walking. This rhythmic movement helps stimulate lymphatic flow, release tight fascia, and support healthy circulation, all without putting pressure on the joints.
For this reason, we recommend oscillating vibration plates as the best option for clients managing lipedema or lymphatic congestion. They’re gentle, effective, and beautifully complement our 3-Stage Body Package, which focuses on repair, circulation, and rejuvenation from the inside out.
Dry Brushing: A Simple Step for Lymphatic Flow
Before using your vibration plate or stepping into an infrared sauna, dry brushing can help stimulate the surface lymph vessels and prepare your skin for detoxification.
Always brush toward your heart moving upward with gentle, sweeping motions.
Red LED Light Therapy
Red light supports collagen production, blood flow, and cellular repair. When used on areas affected by lipedema, it can help reduce inflammation, improve skin tone, and support healing from the inside out.
Infrared Sauna: Deep Detox and Relaxation
The infrared sauna works by gently heating your body from within, helping increase circulation and promoting the removal of toxins through sweat. For lipedema clients, it may also:
- Reduce fluid retention
- Relieve pain and muscle stiffness
- Encourage lymphatic detox
- You can explore the infrared saunas we recommend
Together, these tools — vibration plate, dry brushing, red LED light, and infrared sauna — form a beautiful synergy to support your body’s natural detox pathways and ease lipedema symptoms.
We’re proud to integrate them within our 3-Stage Body Sculpting Treatments, designed to help repair, rebuild, and restore balance from within.
