Can Mature Skin Safely Have Microdermabrasion?

There’s a long-standing myth in the beauty industry that mature-aged skin should avoid microdermabrasion because it causes bruising, tearing, and damage.

At Jessicat’s Medi Spa, we don’t agree.

While microdermabrasion isn’t our primary exfoliation method, it can absolutely be used safely when the skin has first been properly repaired, strengthened, and rebuilt.

What Microdermabrasion Actually Does

Microdermabrasion uses a small abrasive disc combined with suction to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.

This creates a very mild, controlled trauma that signals the skin to begin a healing response. As part of that process, the body sends collagen and elastin to the treated area.

However, this response is relatively minor, which is why we generally prefer treatments that stimulate deeper repair and more meaningful cellular turnover.

Why Our Clients Can Use Microdermabrasion Safely

Because our treatment plans prioritise rebuilding the skin’s structure, many of our clients, including women in their 70s and 80s, can use microdermabrasion comfortably at home.

All products, devices, and one-on-one training are included as part of our service, ensuring treatments are used safely and effectively.

In our experience, when skin is genuinely healthy and resilient, the risk of tearing or bruising is minimal. And even if mild redness occurs, it typically resolves quickly with simple aftercare such as hydration, massage, or LED therapy.

Our Preferred Approach to Exfoliation

Rather than relying on surface exfoliation alone, we focus on maintaining healthy cellular turnover through a combination of:

  • Regular at-home microneedling treatments

  • Targeted AHA exfoliation

  • Nutrient-rich topical skincare

  • Ongoing hydration and barrier repair

Our philosophy isn’t about creating temporarily smoother skin — it’s about creating stronger, better-functioning skin.

When the skin is properly repaired and supported, it becomes thicker, more resilient, and far less prone to irritation or bruising.

Supporting the Skin After Exfoliation

After exfoliation, nourishing the skin is essential.

We commonly follow treatments with our nutrient-rich rice mask, which contains:

  • Rice peptides to support skin renewal

  • Glycerin for deep hydration

  • Sea buckthorn and honey for antioxidant protection

This combination helps restore moisture, calm the skin, and support ongoing repair

At Jessicat’s Medi Spa, our goal isn’t to rely on quick fixes or aggressive treatments.

Instead, we focus on repairing, rebuilding, and strengthening the skin so that it functions properly long term.

When the skin is healthy, resilient, and well supported, many treatments (including microdermabrasion) can be used safely, even on mature skin.
